Our Background Story
First let me start off with introducing myself, the owner of Melina HQ, Caleb. I am seventeen years of age, a junior in high school, and one of the biggest Melina fans. I started watching wrestling in 1998, when I was around four years old and I just completely fell in love with it. It was really the only thing I would watch and not get bored of after ten minutes (excluding horror films, I love them!). Wrestling was kind of a tradition in my family, my grandmother loved it (well, mainly Stone Cold Steve Austin) and so did my mom, aunt, sisters, and father. My father was actually a boxer, so it kind tied in with that. Growing up, the rest of my family kind of grew out of it, but I never did. I became attached to the characters and I just loved to watch it, even if I had to do so alone.
In late 2005/early 2006, I started to visit some wrestling websites. I didn’t know what they were at the time, but they were actually some fansites that people had made. Well, at that time, fan pages on Myspace (yes, I know… so old!) were really taking off, so I decided to make some fan pages on some of my favorite characters in WWE. I didn’t last long on Myspace, mainly because it just didn’t appeal to me. I loved making the fan pages though, that was when I discovered Freewebs (now Webs.com). Of course, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was on there for a little bit, making “fansites” and what-not. I don’t regret my time on there, because I met some really cool people. Friendships that I don’t have anymore, but did for a really long time. It was around early 2007 that I discovered that you can get your sites hosted on sub-domains. Now, I know for some new sites.. all this stuff sounds so stupid, because most of these steps are skipped now.. but, it was how some of us older fansite owners came to be. Well, when I found a host that was accepting sites.. I applied for a sub-domain for a site for one of my favorite Divas at the time, Melina Perez. I just loved that woman, her look, her character, just everything about her. She was like the Stephanie McMahon of the new era in WWE. I didn’t expect to get the sub-domain because I knew I had very little experience. BUT, for some unknown reason, the host actually accepted me and I started on, what I like to think of as, my first real fansite. I forget what I called the site, but it didn’t really last that long because my computer had caught a virus, so I had to close the site and say goodbye to the fansite world for a indefinite amount of time.
In 2008, I came back to the fansite world, ready to get back in the game. I re-united with some friends of mine, one of which was Steph, who I still do talk to from time to time. I was kind of sad that I couldn’t do what I wanted to do with my past Melina site, so I decided to make another. This one was going to be it, I wanted to show my support for Melina (who was out with an injury at the time) and making another site was the only way I knew how. I got a layout together (thanks to the amazing Kim) and created a preview site on Freewebs. I applied for a domain at Starszz and like a week later they accepted. The site was http://melina-p.net and it was seriously one of my most prized possessions. After I had it open for like two months or so, I saw that a Candice Michelle (another favorite Diva of mine) site was up for adoption over at http://fan-sites.org. I applied for it and got it! Now, since Starszz and Fan-Sites.org are majorly based off of their respective forums, I thought it would be better to try and move my Melina site over to Fan-Sites.org, because out of the two.. they were the better host. Also, I really couldn’t handle switching back and forth to each forum. Well, I contacted Starzz about it one night, just before I went to bed. The next morning, I went to log in to see what they had said and it told me I was blocked. I was a bit confused and I tried again, but this time a message popped up and said something like “Blocked! Reason: Time waster.” (not the exact words, but you get the jist of it). I was really mad, but I was so confused because I did not know what was going on. I tried logging into my site and that wouldn’t work either. I made my way over to the main page of the Starszz site, just to find out that my site has been put up for adoption and I could do nothing about it. I didn’t really understand why this was happening. I thought I was being respectful by at least telling them I was planning on moving the site, but apparently they took it a completely different way. I felt helpless and just didn’t know what to do. I did still want the Candice site, so I just worked on that and tried to forget what happened with Starszz. My Candice site did pretty well. Soon enough, I welcomed two co-owners in Devin and Matt. They soon took over completely, as I left because I was really growing out of the fansite scene. I needed a break, which is exactly what I took. I was still around, I just didn’t have a site to call my own.
In 2009, before Melina’s injury, I really thought about doing a Melina site again. Every other time, it didn’t work out.. and Melina was seriously one of the only girls I liked on the roster anymore. I started planning out Melina HQ. I wasn’t treating this site as just another site, I needed to plan ahead of time and I need to think hard. Not sure many people know this, but the domain was purchased by our host, Flaunt, in October of 2009. That is almost a full year before the site opened, which was August 1, 2010. The site has come a long way since then. It is the only site I have stuck with for over a year and it is still going strong! This is my baby and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I guess when they say “Third time’s the charm!,” they really weren’t lying.
